Following Eidos’ January announcement of talks with an unnamed bidder, Yoichi Wada, president of Final Fantasy series publisher Square Enix has revealed that his company was the unidentified Lara Croft pursuer.

According to this GI report, the board of directors of Eidos has agreed to endorse the GBP 84.3 million-bid to the shareholders of the company.

A statement from SQEX Ltd, Square Enix’s holding company, puts it that the deal will serve to “reinforce the Square Enix Group’s position as one of the world’s leaders in interactive entertainment with a broad portfolio of market leading franchises.”

On the eventful acquisition — which has been speculated to have Warner Bros. as the frontrunner — Yoichi Wada had this to say:

Eidos maintains a strong reputation for high quality development and proven expertise in creating characters and storylines that appeal to consumers. Eidos’ products are highly complementary to our business and will accelerate our aggressive expansion into Western markets.

We believe that wide range of both companies’ quality products encompassing major genres will enable us to meet diversified customers’ expectations upon a global basis.

Eidos CEO Phil Rogers points to the company’s portfolio of established franchises as its primary asset, saying that “Square Enix recognises this and sees Eidos as both complementary to their business as well as a valuable brand within videogames.”

And here we thought it was Warner Bros. all along. Defeintely more on this as it develops, which it undoubtedly will.
