The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) has been hosting achievement awards for videogames for twelve years now.  The awards are broken down into multiple categories (this year there are 29) and for each category there are five nominations or less.  For the 12th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, Tomb Raider Underworld has been nominated in two separate categories.

The first is Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering.  Underworld has some stiff competition from the other nominees: Gears of War 2, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Resistance 2.  The original Gears of War won this category a few years ago.  Other previous winners are Crysis, Shadow of the Colossus, and Half-life 2.

Secondly, Lara Croft herself received a nomination for Outstanding Character Performance in Underworld.  This category also looks like it may be taken by Gears of War 2, which was actually nominated twice for two separate characters (Dom and Marcus).  The other two nominees are Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet and Old Snake from Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.  The original Gears of War also won this category when it came out.  Other previous winners include Portal, God of War, and Jade Empire.

Incidentally, Outstanding Character Performance is a relatively new category and it seems to be the first year that this category is not broken down by gender.  Consequently, as the only female nominee this year, Lara Croft will be the first to directly compete against the boys.  The winners will be decided at an awards ceremony on February 19th.  Good luck, Lara.
